The program used to generate the image of earth is called "Xearth" and was created by Kirk Lauritz Johnson. You can find out more about the program by going to his web site http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~tuna/xearth/index.html.

To create the image I have cron run Xearth every ten minutes and save the image it generates to a gif file. The html document renders it and serves it up to you.
